COIs in KuneKune Pigs explained

An in depth look at COI's and how to use this tool

Why are COIs important?

In this article you will find the answers to many questions that you may have around the valuable tool called COI's.

Included in this book:

  • Why are COI's important
  • Typical COI Coefficients
  • Terminology
  • Inbreeding vs Line breeding in KuneKunes
  • Inbreeding depression
  • How to breed for Long Term Health of Your Herd
  • KuneKune Registry views on the topic
  • How the COI is adjustable in the IKKPS Online Herd Book
  • COI Guidelines

I introduced this valuable tool into the KuneKune Community back some 12 years ago now. When I started in the breed and was asking KuneKune breeders about purchasing some of the KuneKune pigs and asked what the COI of a pig was, they were confused as to what I was even talking about. So, when I founded (along with 3 others) the American KuneKune Pig Society, I began to author articles explaining what COIs where and how to use the COI feature to improve the health of your herd. Well, it took off and now most KuneKune Breeders value the tool. Like most tools, it is not the only one in the toolbox. So, while COIs are a very import part of evaluating breeding pairs it is not the sole one. You also want to look at the conformation of the pigs as well.

I have never authored an article that goes more in depth and this article is not used anywhere else so please, take some time and understand this tool better so that you can decide if this tool works for your breeding program.
