Importance of choosing the right KuneKune breeder.

Choosing the right KuneKune breeder is of utmost importance when starting a pig breeding program. A reputable breeder will not only provide you with high-quality pigs but also offer guidance and support throughout your breeding journey. They will have extensive knowledge of KuneKune genetics, breed standards, and breeding practices. Additionally, a good breeder will prioritize the health and well-being of their pigs, ensuring that they are free from genetic diseases and properly cared for.

Therefore, picking the right KuneKune Breeder can be vital to your success!

Researching and identifying reputable KuneKune breeders.

The first step in finding the right KuneKune breeder is conducting thorough research. Start by searching online for KuneKune breeders in your area. Look for breeders who have a strong online presence, with well-maintained websites and active social media profiles. This indicates that they are committed to their breeding program and are transparent about their practices. Additionally, check for any negative reviews or complaints about the breeder. This will give you an idea of their reputation within the pig breeding community.

Once you have a list of potential breeders, reach out to them, and ask for more information about their breeding program. Inquire about the number of years they have been breeding KuneKune pigs and their experience with the breed. A reputable breeder will be happy to share their knowledge and provide you with references from satisfied customers. Take the time to speak with these references and ask about their experience with the breeder. This will give you valuable insights into the breeder's reputation, customer satisfaction, and the health and temperament of their pigs.

Look at the KuneKune Registries breeder’s list and membership list to ensure they are actively registering their pigs and utilizing a registry.  Remember there are three different registries: The International KuneKune Pig Society (IKKPS), the International KuneKune Hog Registry (IKHR) and lastly the American KuneKune Pig Society (AKKPS). IKKPS has two breeder's lists, one in the herd book and one on the website, as well as a Breeder's Map so that you can easily find KuneKune Breeders near you by location.

Evaluating KuneKune breeder's experience and expertise.

When selecting a KuneKune breeder, it is essential to consider their experience and expertise in breeding the breed. A breeder with years of experience will have a deep understanding of KuneKune genetics and will be able to guide you in making informed breeding decisions. They will have a proven record of producing healthy and well-tempered pigs that meet breed standards.

During your research, ask the breeder about their breeding goals and practices. Inquire about the traits they prioritize and the steps they take to ensure genetic diversity within their herd. A responsible breeder will have a clear breeding plan in place, aimed at improving the breed and maintaining its unique characteristics.

Utilize the KuneKune Registries herd books and research the breeder.  Look at the date of birth verses the date of the litter notification and piglet registrations.  This will help you understand if they follow through on doing their registrations.  It will also show you how many they register in a litter and how often they breed.  You will be able to see the pedigrees of the animals you own and in IKKPS, you will be able to see ancestor photos within those pedigrees.  Note: IKKPS is the only one that shows photos within the pedigrees.

Assessing the breeding facility and herd management practices.

The conditions in which the pigs are bred and raised play a significant role in their overall health and well-being. When evaluating a KuneKune breeder, pay close attention to their breeding facility and herd management practices. Ideally, the breeding facility should be clean, well-maintained, and provide ample space for the pigs to move and socialize. The pigs should have access to fresh water and a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs.

When possible, it is nice to visit the breeders in person as mentioned above you can tell a lot about how their animals are being taken care of in their natural environments. If you are unable to visit in person another wonderful option with modern technology is to “facetime” with them.  They will be able to walk you around on the phone and show you what you cannot see in person.  Make sure they show you the animals, pastures, housing and of course those adorable pigs and piglets.

One tip is to look at their water bowls. It is normal for them to be muddy but, is there a buildup of green algae on them as well?  Conscientious breeders will have clean water dishes for their pigs.  You will quickly learn why you cannot hold a muddy water dish against a breeder – as soon as you fill a water dish, they will get in it!  Lol Also look for mud puddles of nice size for the pigs to wallow in.  Are those puddles green?

Inquire about the breeder's herd management practices, including their vaccination protocols, parasite control measures, and overall health monitoring. A reputable breeder will openly discuss what protocols they use and make recommendations for you as well. They should also be knowledgeable about common KuneKune health issues and be initiative-taking in preventing and treating them.

Understanding the breeder's breeding goals and practices.

A breeder's breeding goals and practices can vary widely. Some breeders may focus on producing pigs for meat, while others may prioritize selling breeding stock to other farmers or for show purposes. Before deciding, it is important to align your own breeding goals with those of the breeder. Discuss your specific needs and expectations with the breeder, and make sure they are willing to collaborate with you to achieve your goals.

Inquire about the breeding practices the breeder follows. Ask about their selection criteria for breeding stock and their approach to maintaining genetic diversity within their herd. A responsible breeder will have a well-thought-out breeding plan that aims to improve the breed while minimizing the risk of genetic diseases.

Don’t discount a new KuneKune breeder. Just because they are newer to raising KuneKunes does not mean that they don’t have the experience to purchase from. Ask about their mentor and how they are continuing to learn more to improve their breeding program. Depending on the Registry they have chosen they may be getting lots of experience and continued learning opportunities from their registry. (Example:  IKKPS mentors all our breeders and offers a huge array of continued learning opportunities)

Examining the health and conditioning of the animals.

The health of the animals in their care are crucial factors to consider when choosing your breeder.  KuneKunes are fat and round.  That is what KuneKune means in their native country in New Zealand.  However, it is possible to over condition them by allowing them to get too fat. Likewise, it is important to note ones that are too thin as well.  Watch the animals move around and ensure they can easily walk and run about the pastures. Look at their hooves as well.  Are they short and well done or are they too long and need trimming?

Take a moment to look at their environment.  Are they kept in muddy pens or pastures? What do their grazing areas look like?  Also remember to glance at other animals on their farm to see how well they are cared for as well.  It is helpful to be observant while visiting the breeders as you can often get some wonderful ideas

and tips from their set up.

Reviewing customer testimonials and references.

Customer testimonials and references can provide valuable insights into a breeder's reputation and the quality of their pigs. Ask the breeder for references from previous customers and take the time to reach out to them. Inquire about their experience with the breeder, the health and temperament of the pigs they purchased, and whether they would recommend the breeder to others. This firsthand feedback will help you make an informed decision and ensure that you are choosing a breeder with a record of satisfied customers.

Additionally, check for any online reviews or testimonials about the breeder. Websites, forums, and social media platforms dedicated to pig breeding can be excellent sources of information. However, be cautious of anonymous reviews or reviews that seem overly positive or negative. Take a balanced approach and consider multiple sources of feedback to get a comprehensive understanding of the breeder's reputation.

Pricing and contract considerations.

Before finalizing your decision, it is important to discuss pricing and contract details with the breeder. Ask for a breakdown of the costs involved, including the price of the pigs, any additional fees and transportation expenses if applicable. Compare the prices of different breeders, but keep in mind that quality and reputation should be prioritized over price alone. When you find those “deals” too good to be true, they usually are not good deals at all.  Know the prices of KuneKune pigs in

your area and you may want to stop and consider someone that is selling well under the normal price of these pigs as that is not normal.  Likewise, the opposite, you will want to inquire as to why someone is much higher than the breeders in that area.  It could be because the animal is of superior quality or due to their long-term breeding programs. Those are valid reasons.

Additionally, review the breeder's contract carefully. Ensure that it covers important aspects such as health guarantees if any, breeding rights, and any potential restrictions or requirements. Cover contract rules if a pig is infertile and how that is handled.  Seek clarification on any clauses or terms that you are unsure about. A reputable breeder will be transparent and willing to address any concerns you may have.

For IKKPS, if you have a sales contract identifying the pig clearly you are purchasing and the breeder/seller fails to get the pigs registered, IKKPS will step in to assist you in getting the pig registered provided DNA matches the parents of the animal.  Never hesitate to utilize the help of the breed registry when you need it.

Making the final decision and purchasing your KuneKune pigs.

After conducting thorough research, evaluating breeders, and visiting their farms in person or by video/facetime, it is time to make your final decision and purchase your KuneKune pigs. Choose a breeder who aligns with your breeding goals, has a solid reputation, and prioritizes the health and well-being of their pigs. Choose the best registered purebred KuneKune pigs that you can afford. It will put you ahead in your own breeding program by starting with solid genetics. Once you have made your decision, follow the breeder's purchasing process, and ensure that you are fully prepared to welcome your new pigs into their new home.
