KuneKune Breeders Additional Help Guides

How a KuneKune Is Named

Once you can understand how KuneKunes are assigned their registered names it will make the whole registration process easier for you. In purebred registry things are just a bit different.

How are KuneKune pigs named?

There are two ways in which to get a registered name. One is by doing a litter notification and the other is when you do a dual registration as occasionally, they will need to be modified if that breeder is also using another purebred registry.

A registered name consists of four parts.

  1. the breeders farm name or breeder's prefix
  2. the bloodline of the sire or dam. Females follow dam's line, and the males follow the sire's line
  3. the production number - this is the number the breeder has produced of that line on their farm
  4. Optional but recommended - call name. This is a simple name that you use every day to call your pig. This is only added during the piglet registration process or grazing pig process.

So, if you see the registered name ABC Farms Te Whangi 16 - Hamlet

ABC Farm = the breeder's name

Te Whangi = this means it is a male piglet whose sire (father) is a Te Whangi

16 = that means this is the 16th Te Whangi piglet that the breeder produced on their farm. Knowing this production number also lets you know automatically how much experience the breeder has with this line. The higher the production number the more they have been breeding from this line. (This is another reason that the USA based registry way of doing names is not helpful to the buyer or the breeder). Please note with the renaming method that AKKPS will be using that this will not be valid for them. They are only assigning names to fully registered KuneKunes. This means the production number is not valid for AKKPS anymore as of 01/15/2023.

Hamlet - the simple call name that a new owner or breeder (if retaining) will use daily to call their animal. Unlike dogs a simple call name is all that is needed.

IKKPS Registration Certificate

Understanding the IKKPS Registration Certificate

Breeder registration certificate. This is an electronic registration. The printed certificate is only a tad different as it is embossed instead of having the seal on it.

IKKPS members can choose if they want a mailed registration certificate or an electronic registration certificate.

Breeder registration for our purebred registry

Registered Name is across the top - GMF Ru 6 - Matthew (GMF is Goose Meadow, Ru is the bloodline, 6 means he is the 6th Ru Goose Meadow produced, Matthew is his call name)

Reg # is the registration number - IKKPS 001. Registration numbers always start with IKKPS.

Alt Reg # is the IKHR (International KuneKune Hog Registry) or AKKPS (American KuneKune Pig Society) registration number to make it easy for you to know the other organizations registration number.

Sex: sow or boar

Color: the color (see color chart for the assorted colors)

Wattles: # of wattles (we accept wattled and unwattled piglets for registration)

DOB: - date of birth

ID: Will be ET for ear tag, MC for microchip or T for Tattoo and the unique number the breeder has used.

DNA Case Number: Our prefix is being done now through UC Davis but, they usually start with KPS, NCS, AKB or IKP (this is ours)

COI: - The coefficient of inbreeding.  (While you cannot adjust a registration you can adjust this from 3 generations to 10 in the online herd book)

AVK: Ancestor loss coefficient.  AVK which means ancestor loss coefficient. The purpose is to measure how many ancestors occur multiple times within the documented pedigree of a pig. If every ancestor is unique, the AVK is 100%. It would be higher if there was line breeding in the past.

This is a brand-new tool we are offering in our herd book. (While you cannot adjust a registration you can adjust this from 3 generations to 10 in the online herd book)

Notice the bolded animals in the pedigree, which means that they have show titles. As space is limited it does not show there but does in the online herd book.

In a purebred registry the breeder does the registration certificates.

Litter Notification Record

Understanding the Litter Record in IKKPS

This will help you understand the litter notification record that is returned to you via email by the IKKPS registrar. It is a very cool feature that is exclusive to IKKPS and when you use this along with the IKKPS Members Contract, it will give your buyers a very professional image of your farm. It really helps you look organized.

This is something that we are super excited to offer our IKKPS Breeders / Members

These are amazing features. The first generation will show all the piglets in the litter and their IKKPS Registration numbers.

The second column will show the parents information and the parents registration photos will be displayed as well.

Unfortunately, due to the smaller blocks only the parents' photos will show but, if you look in the herd book all ancestors that have photos loaded will show in the pedigree section within the IKKPS Online Herd Book.  We are so excited to be the first purebred registry for KuneKunes that offers pictures on purebred registration certificates and to be shown throughout the pedigrees in the online herd book.

Litter record for our purebred registry

Litter: - that is the date of birth

In the box: That tells you quickly how many males born alive and stillborn and how many females. This is an excellent feature to use and look back on when you are determined your sows' previous litters and want to know stillbirths and litter sizes.

COI: List the COI of the litter. (While you cannot adjust the COI display on the litter record registration you can adjust this from 3 generations to 10 in the online herd book)

AVK - ancestors loss coefficient.  (While you cannot adjust a litter record registration you can adjust this from 3 generations to 10 in the online herd book)

Inside the first block of the pedigree will list each piglet born in that litter along with their name, registration #, Alt Reg # and wattles.

The second column displays all the information about the parents such as: registered name + call name, Registration number, Alternative Registration number if they are registered with another organization, color, and wattles.

Something important: The animals displayed within the pedigree (the ancestors) will be given the names the way they originated. For example, if you see a prefix that means that animal began with IKHR and that will be the Alternative registration number displayed. (AKBA, AKPR or IKHR #) If that KuneKune Pig started with AKKPS, then you will notice the full farm name and that Alternative registration number is used. (AKKPS #).

As you can see, registering KuneKunes has never been easier. However, should you need any assistance at all, remember we got you. Get in touch.
